Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is reported to affect approximately 5% of people. Characterised by difficulties in performing coordinated motor tasks, DCD has significant impacts on all aspects of daily life. In the past, it was thought that children with DCD outgrow their difficulties, but research has shown that this is not the case; indeed, increasingly, it is evident that children with DCD become adults with DCD, and that the longer term social emotional impacts are often significant. DCD is not typically diagnosed before the age of 5, but motor coordination difficulties are evident well before this age, such that opportunities for vital early intervention are frequently missed. This presentation will describe the efforts of a unique international collaboration working to enhance earlier identification of DCD, so that support can be put into place for young children likely to be diagnosed with DCD after preschool age.
