Marie Dunnion
Lived Experience Partner,
NHS Hereford and Worcestershire
Marie is a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) and Research Fellow with the Cerebra Network at the University of Birmingham. The Cerebra Network is a UK-based academic team that integrates knowledge, expertise, and resources across four leading institutions to deliver greater insight into neurodivergent children and children with rare and complex syndromes. Their research specialises in four key areas of autism, mental health, sleep, and behaviours that challenge.
Marie is also a Parent Carer to an eight-year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism shortly before his fourth Birthday. This lived experience has given Marie an insight into the support available for autistic people, including Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) services. Marie successfully applied for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for her son whilst he was still at nursery. She is, therefore, familiar with the administration involved in this process, including the importance of incorporating sensory processing and sensory regulation in the EHCP.
Marie has been involved with the Sensory Friendly Environments Project since the beginning and has enjoyed being able to contribute to real-world changes to GP surgeries to quickly make a difference to autistic people, essentially improving accessibility and making surgery visits a more positive and repeatable experience.
